Famagusta Municipality condemns Turkish decision to open up part of the beach in fenced off Varosha
CNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 19/07/2017 20:22

The Municipal Council of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta has condemned a decision of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime to open up to the public part of the beach, within the fenced off area of the occupied city.

This part of the once thriving holiday resort, on the eastern coast of Cyprus, has been fenced off since the 1974 Turkish invasion and according to the UN the Turkish military is responsible for it. Repeated attempts to hand the fenced off area of Famagusta – known as Varosha – to UN administration and its Greek Cypriot legal inhabitants have so far failed due to the stance of the Turkish army.

“This decision contravenes resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council 550 and 789, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe which call for the return of Famagusta to its lawful residents,” a press release issued by the Famagusta Municipality says.

UN resolution 550 condemns attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN.

Furthermore it describes the unilateral declaration of independence by the Turkish Cypriots as illegal and invalid and calls on all states not to facilitate or in any way assist the secessionist entity.

The Municipal Council “condemns in no uncertain terms these moves decided by the self-styled Turkish Cypriot Famagusta Municipality and the Turkish Cypriot ‘mayor” Ismail Arter to agree with the Turkish military occupation authorities to open up part of the fenced off beach in Varosha to be used by Turkish and Turkish Cypriots.”

It calls on the Turkish Cypriot “municipality” and organized groups of Turkish Cypriots to review this decision which “tarnishes the trust between the two parties in efforts to find a viable solution in Cyprus.”

Famagusta Municipality calls on the government of Cyprus, the political parties and the Cypriot MPs to make all the necessary representations at all relevant bodies and organisations with regard to “these provocative moves which aim at consolidating the faits accomplis created by the continuing Turkish occupation.”

It also calls on the Turkish Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot ogranised groups which support a comprehensive and viable solution to oppose this “provocative action” as a minimum indication of their sincere wish to reunite the country.
