Plastic bags charge comes into force July 1st
CNA - Cyprus/ΝICOSIA 24/01/2018 18:03

A fee will be charged for plastic carrier bags as of the 1st of July this year, the Department of Environment said on Wednesday.
It added that the minimum fee for each plastic bag will be 5 cents.
“A measure prohibiting free provision of lightweight plastic carrier bag from sellers who have this kind of bags at their points of sale will be implemented as of the 1st of July 2018” a press release said.
“The charge for each lightweight carrier bag will amount to at least five cents (€0.05) plus VAT at all product sellers” it added, explaining that the fee will be shown on the shoppers’ receipt, as well as on the one kept by the seller and will apply to lightweight plastic bags of 15 to 50 microns in thickness.

It will not apply to plastic carrier bags used for hygienic purposes or those provided as a primary package of loose foodstuffs or when their use contributes to avoiding food waste and are below 15 microns thick.
The bill and the regulations, introducing charges for plastic bags, came into effect last November and harmonise Cyprus` legislation with that of the EU.
