Southern EU leaders in solidarity with Cyprus over Turkey’s illegal EEZ actions
Leaders of the southern EU member states, who met in Valletta, on Friday, in the context of a MED7 Summit, expressed both in the Valletta Declaration and their statements their support and solidarity towards the Republic of Cyprus and its sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone and over the situation with Turkey’s illegal actions in it. Cyprus President Nicos Anatasiades has expressed his satisfaction over the strong solidarity he received from his counterparts and thanked them for unanimously condemning Turkish violations.
Cyprus is not alone towards Turkey’s provocative actions, Greek Alternate FM says
Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Sia Anagnostopoulou said that Greece is completely vigilant towards Turkish illegal actions in the Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and stressed that the Republic of Cyprus is not alone before this provocative stance displayed by Turkey.
Cyprus-UAE Foreign Ministers meet in Nicosia
The Cyprus problem, energy developments and Turkish provocations in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), as well as bilateral relations will be among the issues the Foreign Minister of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides will discuss on Saturday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The UAE Minister, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, will have a tête-à-tête with Christodoulides, to be followed by extensive consultations with the participation of officials.
Turkey grants CMP access to 30 suspected burial sites in military areas
Turkey has granted the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) excavation teams access to 30 suspected burial sites in military areas in the Turkish occupied areas of the island, according to a CMP press release. Leonidas Pantelides, the Greek Cypriot member of the CMP told the Cyprus News Agency that the access to burial sites in military areas is very helpful and supportive of the work of the Committee, adding that this week the members will get together to plan their next steps.
Conservation works complete in two Paphos monuments
Conservation works in two monuments highlighting the multicultural past of Paphos, the Paphos hamam and the minaret of the Kebir mosque – Agia Sofia church in Moutallos were completed by the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and a ceremony to mark the event is expected to take place on Saturday, June 22. Antiquities Department archaeologists and experts, in cooperation with the Technical Committee and UNDP contributed to the conservation of these two very important monuments, with EU funding, Takis Hadjidemetriou, the Greek Cypriot Head of the Technical Committee told CNA.
MED7 push for social rights, climate change, migration in Valletta Declaration
The southern EU member states leaders, who met in Valletta on Friday, in the context of a MED7 Summit, presented a united front on a number of challenges Europe is faced with, including social rights, climate change and migration, conveying their will for the European Union to promote solutions in practical terms.
OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President arrives for official visit
OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President, Georgian parliamentarian George Tsereteli arrives in Cyprus on Monday, 17 June for an official visit at the inviation of House President Demetris Syllouris. Tsereteli will be received by President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades. Among others, he will meet with Syllouris, as well as with the Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, the acting Defence Minister, Finance Minister Haris Georgiades and Famagusta Mayor, Alexis Galanos.
Moody`s downgrades Bank of Cyprus` senior unsecured note program
Moody`s Investors Service has affirmed the deposit ratings of Bank of Cyprus Public Company Ltd, while it has downgraded its Senior Unsecured Medium-Term Note Program to (P)Caa2, from (P)Caa1. The rating action reflects the implementation in Cyprus of a new legal framework, which establishes full depositor preference over senior unsecured debt instruments in the event of a bank resolution. The outlook on the long-term deposit ratings remains positive.
Employment rose by 3.1% in Q1
Total employment increased by 3.1% in the first quarter of 2019, compared with the same period in 2018, a provisional estimate of the Statistical Service showed on Friday. Cystat said that in the 1st quarter of 2019 total employment is estimated at 410.077 persons, of which 360.061 are employees and 50.016 are self-employed.
Job vacancies up by 79.8% in Q1
The number of job vacancies rose by 3.001 or 79.8% in the first quarter of 2019 and reached 6.762, compared with 3.761 in the same quarter of the previous year, the Statistical Service of Cyprus reported on Friday. Job vacancies increased by 3.372 or 99.5%, compared with the 4th quarter of 2018.
