Costa – von der Leyen after dinner with Erdoğan: New momentum should be seized for a Cyprus settlement through the UN process

The Cyprus issue featured prominently in a joint social media post by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, following their dinner with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on Wednesday evening in Ankara, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit. The two EU leaders stressed that the "renewed momentum" should be seized to advance a settlement of the Cyprus issue through the UN-led process. Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, said meaningful progress on the Cyprus issue, must be achieved before any positive steps regarding EU–Turkey relations can be considered.

Cyprus recorded the highest share in the European Union in terms of energy used by households for space cooling in 2024, according to data published on Wednesday by Eurostat. Based on the figures, the energy used by households in Cyprus for space cooling amounted to 1,925 terajoules in 2024, corresponding to 16.0% of households' final energy consumption. Malta followed, with the corresponding share standing at 15.0%.

European Parliament adopts resolution on crimes against women and girls in Cyprus in 1974

A resolution on the impact of the 1974 Turkish invasion on the women and girls of Cyprus, the crimes committed by Turkish forces and the consequences for gender equality was adopted on Wednesday by the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The resolution was approved by 575 votes in favour, 33 against and 43 abstentions. All Cypriot MEPs voted in favour. Rapporteur for the file is Greek MEP, Eleonora Meleti who described the resolution as a "historic victory". The adoption of the EP resolution on the impact of the 1974 Turkish invasion on the women and girls of Cyprus is an important moment of an historical vindication, Commissioner for Gender Equality Josie Christodoulou, has stressed.
