OMRES project delivers solutions to support Europe’s clean energy transition
The OMRES project, funded by the European Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP), through the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), is positioning itself at the forefront of Europe’s green energy transition. OMRES aims to integrate zero-emission power technologies into existing energy systems. Focused on hybrid renewable energy source (RES) systems combined with storage, OMRES is developing innovative, digitalized solutions for operation and maintenance that enhance performance, reliability, and profitability of RES.
During the first year of the project, the partners defined the core functional specifications of the OMRES platform, which will incorporate the tools to be developed within the project, as well as a digital twin of a hybrid system in Cyprus. Furthermore, during the first phase of the project, prototype tools and methodologies were developed to support advanced design, operation, and fault diagnosis in hybrid RES systems.
Major solutions include:
A data-driven atmospheric and wake modeling framework enabling highly accurate wind forecasting and wind farm analysis, even in complex terrain conditions.
A stochastic sizing tool for photovoltaic (PV) and battery systems that accounts for uncertainty in both generation and demand, improving system design and flexibility.
An advanced monitoring and parameter estimation framework for power electronic inverters, enabling predictive maintenance and extending equipment lifetime.
The initial development of a high-fidelity digital twin environment for hybrid RES systems, supporting real-time validation and coordinated testing of optimization and control strategies.
These developments have already delivered outcomes, including improved renewable energy planning under uncertainty, enhanced forecasting capabilities, and early validation of diagnostic tools that enable smarter, lifetime-aware operation of critical components.
Looking ahead, the project is expected to generate substantial impact by increasing renewable energy hosting capacity, reducing curtailment and operational risks, extending inverter lifetimes, and supporting better-informed investment and grid planning decisions.
By combining digitalization, advanced analytics, and innovative engineering approaches, OMRES is laying the groundwork for a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy system in Europe. The project’s continued progress is set to play a key role in accelerating the transition toward a zero-emission energy future.
