Art Collaboration between European University Cyprus and Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, associated with the Pierides Foundation [NiMAC] launches the NiMAC

A new collaboration between the Graphic Design Degree program of European University Cyprus (EUC) and the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, associated with the Pierides Foundation [NiMAC] a dynamic initiative supporting emerging artists and designers in Cyprus.

The collaboration led to the design and production of a series of original objects and products created by EUC students, developed during the Fall Semester 2025. The works are now available at the NiMAC Shop and are inspired by the exhibition Fluid Persistence, currently on view at NiMAC until 31 May 2026.

Bridging education and contemporary art in Cyprus

This initiative builds on an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions, reinforcing a long-term commitment to:

  • creative exchange
  • professional development
  • real-world opportunities for emerging practitioners

Through this collaboration, students gain direct experience working with a contemporary art institution, responding to a curatorial framework while developing practical skills in design production and presentation.

The selected projects were developed under the guidance of Dr Elena Stylianou - Associate Professor, Art History, Dept. of Arts, European University Cyprus and Director of NiMAC and Yianna Christoforou - Lecturer, Graphics Design, Visual Communication, Typography and Graphic Production, Dept. of Arts, European University Cyprus, and reflect a diverse engagement with the thematic concerns of Fluid Persistence:

Alexandra Ioana Melika, Cyprus Wetland Flora, 2025

Melika’s work focuses on endemic Cypriot plant species associated with wetland and riparian ecosystems, including Primula palinuri, Ligaria cuneifolia, Althaea officinalis, Mentha aquatica, and Lysimachia vulgaris. Through a process of abstraction, the plants’ natural forms are translated into clean linear outlines that emphasize structure, morphology, and movement, offering a refined visual language that foregrounds Cyprus’s ecological specificity.

Georgia Sachin, Mappings, 2025

Drawing from research into contemporary cartographic materials produced by Cyprus’s Water Development Department, Sachin’s designs reinterpret systems of measurement and control, including wells, dams, rivers, and flow-gauging stations. The work engages with mapping as both a scientific and visual practice, echoing the exhibition’s exploration of fluidity, infrastructure, and the management of natural resources.

Georgia Antoniou, Heat / Salty, 2025

Antoniou’s typographic work is inspired by marine environments and the organic structures of coral reefs. The custom letterforms, shaped through flowing lines, repetition, and branching patterns, evoke the movement and rhythm of underwater life. The project highlights how natural systems can inform expressive and experimental approaches to typography.

Maria Christina Stoian, Pera vresiei, sti Karamania sionizei, 2025

Beginning from a familiar Greek phrase that shifts meaning in the Cypriot dialect, Stoian’s work explores language, displacement, and parallel realities. The typography resists stability—letters distort, drip, and dissolve, behaving like water in constant transformation. The inclusion of an image of the Karamania mountains in Turkey, which one can see from the occupied village Karmi, introduces themes of distance, memory, and loss. The work reflects on fragmentation and the coexistence of multiple truths, where language, like water, can become a site of divergence rather than convergence.

NiMAC Shop: A platform for emerging creatives

Through this initiative, both EUC and NiMAC actively support emerging artists and designers by creating opportunities for visibility, mentorship, and professional engagement within a cultural institution. The NiMAC Shop operates not only as a platform for showcasing student work, but also as a sustainable model: all proceeds will be reinvested into NiMAC’s programmes, directly supporting emerging artists and contributing to the institution’s future activities.
