Naming Ceremony of Amphitheater B102 and Distinguished Lecture in Memory of Prof. Elias Kyriakides

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus are organizing a Naming Ceremony of Amphitheater B102 of the School of Engineering and a Distinguished Lecture in memory of Professor Elias Kyriakides (1975-2019).

The Ceremony and the Lecture will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Amphitheater B102 (Building 10, School of Engineering) at the University of Cyprus.

Opening remarks will be delivered by the Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Marina Neophytou, and the first Chair of the ECE Department and a founding member of the KIOS Center of Excellence, Prof. Marios Polycarpou. Colleagues, collaborators, and former students will pay tribute to Elias Kyriakides, reflecting on the person he was and on the lasting impact of his work in power systems and across the scientific community.

The lecture titled “Power Electronics Technology - Trends and Applications” will be delivered by Prof. Frede Blaabjerg of Aalborg University in Denmark. The lecture will revolve around the evolution of power semiconductor devices, renewable generation, reliability in power electronics, and the use of AI in power systems.

Frede Blaabjerg has been full professor at Aalborg University in Denmark since 1998 in Power Electronics and Drives and has been working with different power electronics application like renewables, motor drives, EV’s, New Power Systems and in the last decade especially been focusing on Reliability Engineering and Power Electronics Based Power System Stability. He has over time trained more than 85 PhDs students, the same number of post docs, received numerous awards like the IEEE Edison Medal for his contributions in Renewables in 2020. He is Honoris Causa on three universities and well as honorary professor at one. He has been Editor in Chief of IEEE Trans. on Power Electronics, President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society and Chairman of the Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy. For the moment he is Co-Lead of the one of the four Danish Pioneer Centers - CAPeX - Pioneer Center for Accelerating P2X Materials Discovery – a cross-disciplinary center discovering materials for Power to X processes https://capex.dtu.dk/. He is also having an ERC Synergy grant called SaferGrid together with 3 professors from RWTH Aachen.

For attending the ceremony and lecture registration is required by October 21, 2026, at the following link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/ptz6aNZNEC

The lecture is open to the public. More information about the lecture can be found at the link: https://www.kios.ucy.ac.cy/naming-ceremony-of-amphitheater-b102-and-distinguished-lecture-in-memory-of-prof-elias-kyriakides/
