For over two decades after the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus and despite facing daily humiliation and belittlement, Eleni Foka was the sole teacher at the elementary school of the occupied village Ayia Triada. “I had to protect the children,” she tells CNA, adding modestly that she does not believe it was an accomplishment.
