€3 million EU funding for a European Festival of Media Freedom

Today, the Commission launched a call for proposals for three editions of a European Festival of Journalism and Media Freedom. With a budget of €3 million, the festival aims to strengthen dialogue, cooperation and partnership between journalists, media, civil society organisations and media professionals in the European Union.

The festival will support discussions on media freedom legislation, disinformation, safety of journalists and the economic challenges facing the sector. It will also help raise awareness of the crucial and difficult work of journalists and the threats to press freedom in the EU. The festival will provide an opportunity to exchange views on the impact of EU legislation on media freedom.

The Commission invites interested media, non-governmental organisations, editors, publishers, universities and research centres to submit their proposals. The successful applicant will be expected to organise three annual editions of the festival, as well as set up and manage a platform for contributions and discussions.

The deadline for applications is 1 March 2025.

The festival will contribute to the objectives set out in the Commission's 2024-2029 political guidelines, and the end of each edition will be accompanied by a set of strategic recommendations, key lessons and good practices.
